As I said in the other post, I really like the 4th edition rules.  Some of the things I think WoTC should keep from 4th edition is the “Four Defenses” structure, as opposed to requiring saving throws.  I think that they should try to keep the non-spellcasters interesting to play all the way up the experience level chart.  I don’t really want a return to the Vancian magic system, but I understand it has nostalgic appeal.  The wizards should, I think, have greater access to spell use, so that they don’t cast their one “Magic Missile”, then pull out the crossbow for the rest of the fight.

They say that they want to incorporate the best points of all previous editions, which sounds nice.  They certainly should try to support the previous editions.  I’m glad I was able to procure all the necessary books and products for years of 4e gaming goodness–I just recently purchased Mordenkainen’s Magnificent Emporium.  4E also got me interested in the “Old School Renaissance”,  so even when I burn out on 4e (unlikely), then I have free resources for a different style of play.  Of course, there’s also my own ruleset (see the “Game Rules” tab, or go here to purchase: https://www.createspace.com/3675333 )

The official announcement was made yesterday here: http://www.wizards.com/DND/Article.aspx?x=dnd%2F4ll%2F20120109

www.enworld.org has an area of their website dedicated to news and information here: http://www.enworld.org/index.php?page=dnd5e  As well as a forum for people to express their delight, angst, etc. here: http://www.enworld.org/forum/new-horizons/

I am a huge fan of D&D 4th edition, especially since they came out with the “Essentials” line.  Still, I am okay with a new edition, for reasons I detailed here: http://www.enworld.org/forum/new-horizons/316055-i-am-perfectly-fine-wizards-coast-producing-d-d-5th-edition.html

I wrote: “I am perfectly fine with WoTC producing D&D 5th Edition  Why? Because I have the perfect edition, sitting right here beside me, right now–4th edition Essentials. I just got “Mordenkainen’s Magnificent Emporium”, which, apart from perhaps some dungeon tiles sets, and possibly some really good adventures, completes my purchases. I suppose, too, that once I get some bills paid off, I might subscribe to DDI. Otherwise, I have everything I need for years of gaming.

So, go ahead, WoTC, and make a new edition; I’d bet $1 million that it will be awesome, and that it will bring people into the hobby, and that you’ll make lots of money, because I see what others refuse: that you are listening to your customers, and are working hard to please them.

The only suggestion I would have would be to, if at all possible, support all previous editions

Remember, don’t try to make the perfect Pepsi; instead, make the perfect Pepsis.”
